Sunrise Magic: Catching Wahoo on a Saint Lucia Fishing Adventure

Hey fellow anglers and island dreamers! If you're craving the ultimate tropical escape where adventure meets serenity, let me tell you about my unforgettable fishing trip to Saint Lucia in December 2024. Picture this: crystal-clear turquoise waters, lush green mountains rising dramatically from the sea, and the promise of big game fish lurking just offshore. That's exactly what I experienced on a half-day charter out of the luxurious Zoëtry Marigot Bay St. Lucia resort. If you haven't been, add this Caribbean gem to your bucket list—it's paradise for both relaxation and adrenaline junkies like me.

Our adventure kicked off at dawn from Marigot Bay, that iconic "secret hideaway" nestled between verdant hills.  Captain Roy who I met on the dock the day before coming in from a charter met me before sunrise.  We loaded up with fresh bait—and set off under a sky painted in soft pinks and oranges. The air was crisp with the scent of salt and tropical flowers, and the gentle hum of the engines lulled us into anticipation.

We reached our spot near Grand Caille Point just as the sun crested the horizon. This rugged headland, with its sheer cliffs plunging into the deep blue, is a hotspot for Wahoo. The water here drops off quickly to over 1,000 feet, creating perfect upwellings that attract baitfish—and the big boys that hunt them.

Bam! My rod bent double at the first hint of sunrise. "Fish on!" I yelled, heart pounding as I grabbed the reel. The line screamed off—classic Wahoo strike. These silver torpedoes are built for speed, hitting up to 48 mph, and this one was no slouch. I fought it for a solid 10 minutes, the rod throbbing in my hands, waves slapping the boat. Our captain expertly maneuvered us, keeping the line taut. Finally, it surfaced: a gleaming Wahoo, its metallic flanks flashing in the morning light. High-fives all around!

Back at the resort by noon, the chef at Zoëtry grilled our fresh catch with local spices—think jerk seasoning and lime. We feasted poolside, toasting with rum punches as iguanas scampered nearby. Saint Lucia in December is perfect: mild temps around 80°F, fewer crowds post-hurricane season, and schools of migrating fish.

If you're planning a trip, book a charter from Marigot Bay—Zoëty's concierge makes it seamless. Whether you're a seasoned angler or newbie, this spot delivers thrills and tranquility.
